Fed Probes 2011-2012 Mustang Manual Shifter Snags
While the new 2011-2012 5.0 Mustangs have been winning the hearts of Mustang enthusiasts and owners for its world class engine, Ford has been having some trouble with the six-speed manual transmissions.
Many owners have been experiencing issues with shifting engagements under acceleration, the shifter hangs up and will not go into gear. The problem was at first considered isolated but has become more and more widespread, now to the point that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating.
The probe affects some 26,000 manual equipped Mustangs. The agency says it has received 32 complaints from owners that allege “an unexpected inability to shift into gear”. The subject has been a growing one among owners in popular Mustang forums of late, signaling that his is a larger problem than originally thought.

Owners are saying they are having much difficulty getting their issues resolved with dealers who often cannot solve the problem with repeated visits. Some of the discussions look at the clutch assembly as a possible source, not fully disengaging at times.
A TSB for the clutch assembly was issued last fall that sought to address some issues revolving around high rpm engagement. It is not known however it it was directly related to the complaints that customers continue to file with NHTSA.
According to a report in the Detroit News, Ford said it was aware of the investigation. “We will fully cooperate with the government as they review this matter,” spokesman Wes Sherwood said.
If a fix is identified the investigation could result in a recall for Mustangs equipped with the Getrag 6-speed manual transmission.
